Steel Challenge
The USPSA Steel Challenge, governed by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA), is a popular speed-shooting competition focused entirely on speed and accuracy. Competitors use centerfire handguns, rimfire pistols, rimfire rifles, or Pistol Caliber Carbines (PCC) to engage arrays of five steel plates as fast as possible.
Steel Challenge competitions are welcoming to everyone. Our matches are nationally sanctioned and accept shooters of all skill levels, ages, and equipment. While practicing at the range will help you build your skills, training and competing in monthly matches can accelerate your progress dramatically—helping you become faster, more accurate, and more confident with every stage. Sure you can come to the range and put holes in paper and your skills will improve. Train for and come to monthly competitions and your skill improvement will accelerate dramatically.
Speed shooting for everyone
Cheshire County Shooting Sports is a member of the SCSA and holds nationally sanctioned matches monthly from spring through fall. The speed and accuracy sport:
Welcomes all levels of skill
Newbie to Military/Law enforcement
Welcomes all age groups
Preteen to distinguished senior
Open to the public
Matches cost about $30
Classification
Steel Challenge is designed for shooters of all skill levels. You won’t be competing directly against experienced Masters or Grand Masters just because you’re new. The SCSA uses a classification system that groups shooters by skill level. After completing the required number of sanctioned stages, shooters receive a classification:
D → C → B → A → M (Master) → GM (Grand Master)
Your results are compared with other shooters in your classification, giving you a way to track your progress as your skills improve. Whether you’re shooting your first match or working toward Grand Master, Steel Challenge gives you a clear way to measure your improvement, build confidence, and have fun along the way.
Safety
The safety requirements for the USPSA Steel Challenge Shooting Association (USPSA) focus on strict firearm handling, mandatory protective gear, and explicit Range Officer (RO) commands. Matches are conducted under "Cold Range" rules, meaning all firearms must remain completely unloaded at all times unless a competitor is actively standing on the firing line and has been instructed to load by an RO.

Action Pistol is your premier destination for dynamic competitive shooting. We proudly host sanctioned matches designed to test marksmanship, speed, and safe gun handling. Whether you are a first-time competitor looking to learn the ropes or a seasoned Grand Master aiming to improve your stage times, you will find a welcoming, safety-focused community waiting for you on the range.
Beginners are encouraged to attend a Wednesday practice before shooting their first match.
Practices and matches are open to the public, and no competition experience is required.
USPSA Matches
The United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) is the ultimate test of dynamic "run and gun" shooting. In these matches, competitors safely navigate complex, obstacle-filled stages, shooting on the move at an array of scoring paper and falling steel targets. It is a thrilling sport that demands a perfect balance of speed, accuracy, and strategic stage planning. Because the course designs constantly change, no two stages are ever the same, ensuring that every match presents a fresh, exciting challenge for shooters of all divisions and skill levels.
New to Action Pistol?
Wednesday evening practices provide a relaxed, low-pressure environment to learn range procedures, match etiquette, and safe firearm handling while building confidence and receiving guidance from experienced competitors. No specialized competition firearm is required—most participants use the handgun they already own.
These informal, relaxed evenings are dedicated to running drills, working on specific techniques, and enjoying the camaraderie of our local shooting community. Our experienced Range Officers and seasoned competitors are always on hand to mentor newcomers, ensuring everyone learns the safe and proper mechanics of action shooting in a supportive, low-pressure environment.
When We Meet
Action Pistol runs during the spring, summer, and fall.
Practice: Spring, Summer, Fall -Wednesday evenings in Pistol Bay 1 – $5. Winter - Thursday evenings in the Indoor range

Whether you’re sighting in a hunting rifle, learning the fundamentals, or preparing for long-range competition, CCSS offers opportunities for rifle shooters of all experience levels.
Rifle shooting at CCSS ranges from .22 LR and smallbore shooting to centerfire rifles at distances up to 600 yards. New shooters can build their skills through instruction and practice, while experienced riflemen can take part in competitive shooting, long-range training, and a variety of specialized events.

Regular electronic-target practice gives shooters an opportunity to build confidence at 200 yards while learning from experienced riflemen. From there, shooters can progress to 300- and 600-yard shooting and introductory matches.Getting Started
You don’t need to be an experienced long-range shooter to get started. If you can shoot safely and confidently at 50 yards, you can begin developing the skills needed for longer distances.CCSS is also home to rifle instruction and youth programs, and our range hosts state-sponsored hunter education courses. Whether your goal is to become a better hunter, develop your marksmanship, or compete at 600 yards, there’s a place for you here.

The Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) is the international organization that created and governs the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting™. This unique shooting sport combines marksmanship, history, and friendly competition by recreating the spirit of the American Old West.
Competitors shoot timed courses using 19th-century-style firearms while dressed in period-inspired clothing and taking on a unique cowboy or cowgirl alias. Each stage features creative scenarios that challenge participants' speed, accuracy, and safe firearm handling. The emphasis is on having fun while embracing the history, traditions, and camaraderie of the Old West.
Cowboy Action Shooting is ideal for:
History enthusiasts
Recreational and competitive shooters
Families looking for a welcoming shooting community
Anyone interested in historical firearms and Old West culture
Whether you're an experienced competitor or completely new to the shooting sports, SASS offers categories and stages that accommodate all skill levels.
Experience Level
All experience levels are welcome.
Beginners are encouraged to attend a match as spectators before participating. Experienced members are happy to answer questions, explain the sport, and help newcomers get started safely.
Competition categories allow everyone—from junior shooters to seniors and Elder Statesmen, men and women alike—to compete with others of similar age and equipment. Categories also include both modern smokeless and traditional black powder firearms.
Member/Public Eligibility
Both members and the public are welcome to attend matches as spectators.
Participation in matches may require club and/or SASS membership depending on the event. All SASS competitors register under a unique cowboy or cowgirl alias that becomes part of their shooting identity.
Equipment Expectations
Competitors use 19th-century-style firearms, with most choosing modern reproductions for safety and reliability.
Typical equipment includes:
Two single-action revolvers
One lever-action rifle
One period-style shotgun (lever-action, pump, or side-by-side)
A variety of approved firearm models and manufacturers are available.
While period clothing is not always required for first-time participants, traditional Old West attire is encouraged. Authentic-style clothing typically features button-front garments (no visible modern zippers), boots, hats, and other period accessories.
Cost
Match fees and membership costs vary. Please contact the club or visit the SASS website for current pricing and membership information.
Safety & Orientation Requirements
Safe firearm handling is the highest priority in Cowboy Action Shooting.
New shooters should attend a match to observe the sport and receive guidance before competing. All participants are expected to follow SASS safety rules and match procedures.
One of the core principles of SASS is "the Spirit of the Game." Competitors are expected to embrace the intended challenge of each stage rather than look for loopholes or technical advantages. Good sportsmanship, safety, and having fun are valued just as highly as achieving a fast score.
